The Combitrain is the newest LHV-configuration. These Combitrains have been riding around in Australia a lot longer as a B-double or Scandinavia B-train/Link trailer. Because many transporters' fleets consist of road tractors and trailers, is it logical to search for an LHV configuration for which the existing fleet could be used. A middle axle LHV behind the trailer used to be the right solution. However, it is not possible to individually use the central axle with the road tractor. It should be possible to deploy an LHV vehicle as widely as possible within the fleet, for a good return. For this the middle axle LHV ultimately is a costly choice because multiple trailers would have to be equipped with an (expensive) drawbar coupling.
With the Combitrain Tracon Ecocombi provides the solution. An "in-between semi trailer" between the existing road tractor and trailer. The Combitrain features a slidable axle assembly. You can optionally use it as a single vehicle with the axle retracted or as an LHV vehicle with an extended axle, wherein the extended portion is equipped with a fifth wheel for the trailing semi trailer. The Combitrain is easy to operate and requires little maintenance.
LHV is officially permitted in the Netherlands. However, there are specific requirements for the LHV combination and the driver. Here below a list of the main requirements:
-the company needs to dispose of a Basic LHV Dispensation;
-the driver must have had his EC driving license and relevant experience for at least 5 years;
-the driver may not have had any driving disqualification for the last 3 years.
-the driver must have a valid LHV certificate (2 day course).
-maximum length of the entire LHV combination is 25.25 meters (standard 16.50 meters for the road tractor-trailer or 18.75 meters for the truck-trailer);
-a cantilever lift or truck mounted forklift on the LHV trailing semi trailer will count towards the maximum length;
-the minimum total loading length should be 18.00 meters;
-the maximum total load length should be 21.82 meters;
-maximum weight of the whole LHV combination (GVW) is 57.5 tons for a two-axle road tractor and 60 tons for a three-axle road tractor (leading axle is sufficient);
-tractor power: 5 KW per ton GVW. On the license plate of the road tractor, the maximum permissible GVW is indicated;
-turning circle of LHV combination: outer radius 14.50 meters (standard 12.5 meters), inner radius 6.50 meters
-the LHV combination is allowed to have a maximum of two swivel points;
-all vehicles in the LHV combination must have an LHV note on the vehicle registration document (code 134);
-to be eligible for an LHV note on the vehicle registration document all vehicles must comply with the LHV requirements and be inspected.
-not allowed in case of fog or slippery road surface;
-The driver is responsible for ensuring that the composite LHV combination complies with the law (turning circle!);
-it is not allowed to drive in urban areas without dispensation;
-it is not allowed to pass railway crossings;
- it is not allowed to transport cattle, indivisible load, liquids or hazardous substances;
-because of its stability, it is not permitted to only (mainly) load the rear vehicle;
-on the digital map of the National Service for Road Traffic can be seen where it is allowed to drive with a basic dispensation: Digital LHV Map
Two length variations of the combitrain
The Combitrain is available in the short version of 8,100 mm or in the city version of 10,200 mm.
Any brand/type of semi trailer 13,600 mm can be fitted behind the short Combitrain of 8,100 mm. When equipped with a under slider lift you have a good replacement for your closed box truck. The road tractor with Combitrain is admittedly about 60 centimetres longer, but it has a Swivel point and a steering rear axle. This makes this combination much more manoeuvrable. When new Euro standards for road tractors are issued, you can easily replace the road tractor instead of a complete closed box truck.
Behind the city-Combitrain of 10,200 mm a city-semi trailer of up to 11,105 mm can be fitted. In that case, you can plan with load lengths of entire meters in both trailers. Both trailers can individually be used in the city. These Combitrains can be equipped with a under slider lift, the semi trailers can be equipped within the LHV length with a cantilever lift or a tuck-away lift.

Tracon-chassis are designed for prolonged and intensive use. The main beams of the chassis are therefore welded on both sides for added strength, which is unique in trailer construction. In addition, the chassis is equipped with a cross-beam at every 400 mm, so that a heavy floor load is made possible. The mounting plate in the neck is as much as 10 mm thick to prevent distortion in the long term. By an ingenious construction the two chassis parts are connected to each other. After many years of practical experience it appears that this construction requires no maintenance. In conclusion, this chassis is the foundation for an extra long life!
As a standard, Tracon Combitrains are galvanised and then covered with a lacquer coating. A very good protection against corrosion.
Galvanisation is also called thermal spraying. When galvanizing, liquid zinc is heated and sprayed on the pre-blasted bare chassis. During this process, a zinc wire or zinc powder is transported through a spray gun, and heated with a flame. The hot liquid metal is applied in a thin layer with a spray gun and will immediately solidify into a well adhering tough layer. Thereafter, the chassis is painted in colour.
For a small additional charge, it is possible to galvanize all our chassis thermally. This is the best possible anti-corrosion treatment. Thermal galvanizing is an immersion process, whereby the liquid zinc, at a temperature of approximately 450°C, reaches all corners of the chassis, both internally and externally. The steel and the zinc together form a zinc alloy. This very strong protective layer is covered by a pure zinc layer. The zinc is thicker on the vulnerable edges, making the protection even better. Galvanised chassis are very sustainable, maintenance-free and offer maximum protection. A thermally galvanised chassis is rust resistant for at least 15 years.
Certified 28 mm flat plated floor. Equipped with wear resistant anti-slip profile. Through the support of many crossbeams (every 400 mm), this floor is suitable for heavy loads. A certified floor load of up to 9,000 kilograms per lift truck axle is permitted.
Robust construction with steel front corner posts. A headboard is fitted between the front corner posts. A bumper strip of 400 mm high and 5 mm thick is welded to the chassis in order to create maximum strength on the inside. The front comes standard in the colour RAL9006 and can be supplied in any colour.
Steel rear portal with in between flat solid rear doors, which makes the application of advertisement very well possible. The doors are equipped with 4 hinges and double locks. Two heavy steel abutments are mounted under the doors.
Double woven 900 grams canvas fitted with stainless steel over-centre fasteners. At the front and rear fitted with a ratchet.
Cargo Securing Certificate
It is of great importance to sufficiently secure the load so that the goods can be transported safely. Poor securing annually account for millions of Euros worth of damage and many accidents. In some European countries there is legislation which stipulates that the construction has to comply with certain strength requirements. These requirements state that the construction of the upper structure should be strong enough in order to absorb the forces coming from the cargo. The relevant construction is then tested in practice for strength. If the strength is sufficient then a certificate is issued specifically for that structure. This certificate also indicates the maximum weight of the cargo. Tracon has a cargo securing certificate for all versions, even for beverage transportation.
Cargo Securing System
Tracon offers you a unique cargo securing system (Tracon Strap). With this system, the securing straps are solidly incorporated in the structure. The driver can stretch and secure the straps over the load at the correct height from 1 side. The unique feature is that this system is integrated in the roof rail and therefore it can slide along the entire length. The securing straps are located at only 60 mm. under the roof so that the load can pass well underneath. This can even be used with round or abnormally shaped goods. Besides time savings, this system also provides safer working conditions for the driver, who does not have to climb to get the straps across the goods.
Which steering system is the right one for you?
As a standard, our LHV Combitrains are equipped with a trailing steering axle. This will start steering along automatically through friction with the road surface. When reversing this is automatically blocked. Through the standard application of a trailing axle, independently of the type of the LHV trailing semi trailer, it is always possible to stay within the legal path. As such, you can also take a non-steered LHV trailing semi trailer along.
A hydraulic steering system is applied to the longer Combitrain (10.200 mm) and is required when you find yourself in situations with very limited space to manoeuvre. This is forced steering which also works when reversing.
Optionally, it is possible to select a tuck-away lift. Basically we have chosen for the brand Dhollandia, also because of the large number of service points which is present in the Netherlands. So you can be assisted quickly when necessary. On the Combitrain with an internal platform length of 8,100 mm it is possible to mount a lift with a 1,500 mm platform and a loading capacity of 2,000 kg. On the Combitrain with an internal platform length of 10,200 mm it is possible to mount a lift with a 1,800 mm platform and a loading capacity of 2,000 kg.
